Amanda Brugel

(February 27th, 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a quiet community located on this part of the island of Montreal known as the West Island. This West Island, to those who are unfamiliar with it, is a large region that runs from Lachine all the way west. Amanda Brugel is said to have been born on the West Island. But it's not the case. Brugel was raised on Courtice just outside Oshawa within Ontario. The first goal she had was to become a dancer. Then, a growth rate increased her height and she outgrew her dance partners she was able to have. In an interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet, 1 inch." When I grew out of male companions and gave up, I decided to give up. Many former dancers turn to acting, and in Brugel's situation, it was a suggestion from a high school drama teacher that led her in the right direction. It was the teacher who recommended she pursue a role for the annual school production. She auditioned and was cast in the role of Anne of Green Gables. She was given a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship to attend York University's Theatre Program, where she graduated in 2000 with a degree of Bachelor's in Fine Arts. Through the years since, Brugel has landed roles on more than 60 productions on small and big screens drawing the most attention when she landed the character as Rita in the award-winning show The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel is the only Canadian actor in the season 1 and only appeared at times.
